“Study Bach, there you will find everything”

Johannes Brahms was fascinated by the work of earlier composers, none more than Johann Sebastian Bach, and urged his composition students to study the works of his musical idol. It is evident in Brahms’s choral motets (op 74 and op 110) that he was intimately familiar with Bach’s works in the genre.
Welsh Camerata performs these pieces alongside two of Bach’s motets - Jesu, meine Freude and Komm, Jesu, Komm - which stand at the pinnacle of choral writing. Hearing them side by side with the Brahms motets illuminates the relationship between these two great composers in a ‘conversation’ across two centuries.
