We at Welsh Camerata are very excited about our forthcoming concert of music by female composers, Renaissance Women, taking place in Cardiff on Sunday 5 July. Here’s a sneak peek – a rehearsal recording of the beautiful madrigal O notte, o ciel by Madalena Casulana, the first woman ever to have her music published.

Casulana, along with Barbara Strozzi, lived and worked in the secular world. Our other pieces were written by nuns - it was often easier for women during this period to compose in the environment of convent life, where they would write sacred music and occasionally instrumental pieces. We look forward to celebrating this wide variety of female creativity.
